Early reports indicate that Chrissie Wellington started feeling ill yesterday, on October 8, 2010, and had hoped to feel better on race day. What started as a simple sore throat in the afternoon turned into a flu-like symtoms the next morning. She decided to withdraw during the last minute at bike transition on race morning. Wellington cited it being one of the hardest decisions in her life, and that out of respect for the race and to other athletes, she chose not to start the because she did not feel comfortable enough that she would be able to finish.
This changes things up for the women's field because Wellington was projected to be the expected favorite, and has been for the past two years. It's unfortunate to not be able to see her clinch another win to keep the streak alive, but I suppose we'll just have to be patient enough to wait another four years for it to happen. If anything, this will only be a gap for her in a long streak of dominance. See my recent Chrissie Wellington post here
